Training and Discussion Rooms
In the past few years, Convene has been used by educators, broadcasters, bloggers and trainers to host group talks, discussions and workshops that they otherwise would not be comfortable hosting or would be blocked from hosting on a mainstream chat app. s t. These sessions are typically synchronous connections where up to 850 people are in a chat room at the same time. Convene enables such discussions and spaces due to the ease of use, requiring no specific app (join with your existing browser), no registration and no personal information to join a chat room. From these convenings, we've observed that people have been able to talk about the issues affecting them, sometimes for the first time.
Key Features:
Convene works as a compliment to streamline messaging apps like WeChat or WhatsApp. It offers a secure space to exchange information ephemerally; then to leave it behind with no trace.
When rooms are deleted there's no trace of the people that were connected or the messages shared. All messages and media are removed. The only thing viewable by network monitors is the link, or domain, a user has accessed.
Case Study: Side Conversations via Direct Rooms
The journalist service in this high risk region will pilot the use of direct rooms in Convene. After many discussions of possible uses, direct rooms were most appealing as a starting point. Direct rooms allow two people to connect in a room that no one else can join. If the room link is copied and shared, no one else can enter that room. This guarantees confidence for their team—knowing that if links get picked up by bad actors, any room where people have already connected is kept secure and private between them.
The defined use case is to move sensitive information that is typically sent over WeChat to a temporary secure chat. These are not conversations that intend to be kept around. Rather, a temporary space for two people to exchange information, then delete the chat when they’re done.
Key Features:
A direct room is a one-to-one secure chat room. Anyone who has a direct link to a journalist can open a room with them.
No one else can join a one-to-one room by default.
Uncompressed media sharing
Export chat and download media
Voice memos
The room can be deleted by both people in the room.
Anyone can set up their own direct link.
We deployed a custom instance of Convene for this journalist service. The brand and URL are intentionally nondescript, appearing as a chef’s blog, with recipes featuring the traditional products .
Case Study: Tip Line
Convene reduces the barriers and increases privacy for citizens giving tips or sharing information on stories. Different modes of Convene can be used to set up a tip line: a one-way file drop; or a group chat.
Beta Release - Distribution Channel: Convene rooms can be used for content distribution. When you set up a group chat, you have the following configuration options:
Allow room history to be viewable by new members
Set room as read only
